Piggy Banks are an absolute hit with the kids. In the
middle ages people used to store items such as salt in wide necked jars
which were made from a clay called "pygg". The "pig"
jar retained its name long after potters stopped using "pygg"
clay to produce pottery. Money also used to be kept in the jars and in
England, by the turn of the eighteen century, the jars had acquired the
name of "pig banks", from where followed the name "piggy
bank." These piggy banks were ceramic and had no hole in the
bottom, so the pig had to be broken to get the money out.
Piggy banks can be used to store those little coins and money that will
go a long way in letting your child know how to value money. As the
child grows up, encourage him/her to put any small prize money or coins
into the piggy bank. They can always be emptied when your kid wants buy
stationery or something trivial that he/she has been demanding since a
long time. This kind of a behavior, if encouraged early in life, will go
on to make your child a responsible adult.
Children are given piggy banks as birthday or Christmas presents to help
encourage saving. While buying piggy banks for the kids certain things
must be kept in mind- as these days piggy banks of different colors and
sizes are available, they can be tried out, the holes in the piggy banks
should not be big, musical piggy banks are also fun to have, you should
go for the lighter piggy banks so that the child is not hurt.
